Today is Tommy McBrien’s 101st birthday!
Thomas joined the RAF in April 1939 at just 19 years old. He was in the RAF technical ground crew- with the rank of Aircraftsman 1st Class.
After working in various locations in England, he set off on a voyage to Singapore in April 1941. Throughout the war he worked mainly on Catalinas and Dakotas as well as many other aircraft.
Most of his time was spent in India, though the locations he was in are now mostly in Pakistan, as this was before India was partitioned.
Tommy has also been in Indonesia, Australia and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). He was in Singapore in February 1942 where he was extremely fortunate to be evacuated hours before the Japanese invaded. On D Day Tommy was in India, and he eventually made his way back to Enniskillen in 1945, having been away for 6 years!
From all of us at the NIVSO, we wish you a very happy birthday Tommy!
