Effects of Moral Injury in Northern Ireland: call for research participants

July 1, 2021

As part of our commitment to research in the Veterans' sector, we regularly engage with students and universities in their call for participants to engage in their research.

We have been contacted by a student, Shane Sweeney, from the University of Utrecht, in the Netherlands, who is investigating the effects of Moral Injury caused by non-state political violence in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, as research for his Master's thesis.

This study is in coordination with ARQ Centrum 45' refugee centre, in the Netherlands, and is in tandem with several research studies on Moral Injury in different populations.

The aim of the research is to be able to better understand distress that occurred during the Troubles, for all involved.

Shane has chosen to investigate a Northern Irish sample population, and has assured us that this study is unbiased and aims to hopefully aid in the support and treatment for all effected by the Troubles. This research has also gone through the appropriate ethical review protocols.

The data gathered from Shane’s research will be used and analysed in his thesis as well as in a wider PhD study.
