Continuing our theme following International Women's Week, we are celebrating Wing Commander (Rtd) Jen Robinson OBE.
Jen has retired from the skies, and now spends time supporting the community as The Coleraine Veterans’ Club Project Coordinator.
In 2017, Coleraine Veterans’ Club was established by Millburn Community Association as an Armed Forces’ and Veterans’ Breakfast Club. The aim was that the Club would facilitate better integration of veterans into the local community.
In 2019, the Club’s members decided they would like to do more, and with support of an Armed Forces Covenant Fund community grant the Club grew.
Now based within a 7 acre site known locally as the Cornfield, the Coleraine Veterans' Club has since built a partnership with the local Men’s Shed, began working in the community gardens and initiated a project to introduce an apiary to site.
The success of this project was evidenced during the first lockdown when the veterans supported the local community by manning an emergency food bank.
Today, the Club’s mission is to reduce social isolation, promote camaraderie and offer peer support through activity. Enabled by an Armed Forces Covenant Fund Positive Pathways grant, the Club is working to firmly knit itself into the network of support for veterans in Northern Ireland, for now and for the future.
