Staff from the Northern Ireland Veterans' Support Office were delighted to attend an Open Day on Friday the 23rd of July run by Let’s Do Veterans' Support in Clough, Downpatrick.
The sun shone on a fantastic family event, which showcased the idyllic stretch of Kennedy’s lake, where Veterans can rehabilitate through fishing, enjoy some peaceful solitude, meet like-minded Veterans or enjoy the peer support that meeting as a cohesive group brings. Charlie, our Defence Gardens Scheme Coordinator made a catch and showed us how it’s done!
On the Open Day, families picnicked on the grass beside the lake, enjoyed a burger from the BBQ, chatted around a campfire, went out in a rowing boat to meet the swans and engaged in a number of activities suitable for all the family.
Airsoft target shooting and archery were popular, along with the bouncy castle for the little people present, however, by far the most entertaining was the wet sponge stocks. Rob Maxwell, the event’s organiser, took a real soaking, much to everyone’s amusement!
We were delighted not to be placed in the stocks, and thoroughly enjoyed networking with Veterans, their families and other individuals from the Veteran specific and friendly organisations represented on the day… whilst staying completely dry!
The lake has an access path running alongside, with accessible wheelchair stations that enable Veterans who use wheelchairs to access the lake. The site is scenic, with ample car parking and Veterans are warmly welcomed to use the facility.
