Vacancy – Somme Nursing Home – Project Manager: Veterans' Advice-line for Statutory Professionals

February 10, 2022

A vacancy has arisen for a VASP Project Manager, based primarily in the Somme Nursing Home and working to/with the Northern Ireland Veterans’ Support Office.

While the post is based in Belfast its business covers the whole of Northern Ireland so the successful candidate may also work from home but will be expected to travel widely as part of their duties.

The Veterans' Advice-line for Statutory Professionals is a new scheme funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust designed to fill a capability gap in the range of services available to support veterans in need.  While not necessarily for individual veterans to access, it is aimed at providing advice and guidance to people who, in the course of their professional roles, come across veterans in need and have little knowledge of supporting agencies and services available to help them.  It is intended to be available "out of hours" when conventional avenues are closed, to assist them in determining a suitable pathway for the veteran to follow once discharged from their responsibility or care.

The scheme will also facilitate a temporary residential facility within the Somme Nursing Home which can be used, in extremis, to keep a veteran safe until other support facilities become available.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a VASP Project Manager (full-time commitment over 52 weeks per year, but see detail below)  who will develop, implement and oversee the delivery of the advice-line and residential facility and manage a team of remunerated volunteers who assist in staffing it.  The role includes a major networking and liaison function with would-be information seekers to advertise and disseminate access to the capability.  In essence, the job is advocating the service by day while overseeing the advice-line by night and at weekends.

The successful applicant will be on a two year fixed contract that runs to 31st March 2024, at which point the funding will be reviewed. The first six months will be on probation.  The post holder will be required to work a 37.5 hour week (net) but at self-determined times, to include evening and weekends where necessary.  The post holder will be given infrastructure and business support by the Somme Nursing Home and will be responsible to its Board of Directors for service delivery but will routinely and regularly report functional issues to the Head of the NIVSO and thus engage with the wider veterans' support community.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated individual, with proven ability to project manage, with excellent communication skills and an interest in all aspects of veterans' support.

The salary for the appointment is set at £25,000 gross per annum but may become negotiable; as will entry to a pension scheme. Holiday entitlement will be 28 days plus 6  public holidays.

Application forms and a full job description may be obtained by emailing:

Interested applicants are asked to return the application form along with a CV by 1700hrs on Friday 4th March 2022.
